A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Have YOU Joined a Local DKos Group Yet?
Well, I'm pretty sure that most of the regular crew which inhabit the Connect! Unite! Act! diaries are already members of a Local Daily Kos Group. I am. I belong to the Koscadia Group, which encompasses the greater Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, WA metro area.
But what about the rest of you? We need you to join and get active in your local group. You know why? This place has been around for over a decade now, and it's accomplished some extraordinary things. Helping make Barack Hussein Obama a household name in America. Helping turn a multitude of unconnected people into a pipeline of cash to make the mostly unknown Governor of a small NE State the recipient of over $50 million dollars worth of presidential campaign donations via the internet, in the era BEFORE Amazon.com and PayPal. This Community has become a part of the history of the nation over the past decade plus. I believe we have more to accomplish, and I'd like it very much if you joined navajo, Meteor Blades and kos (and me!) in the coming days and years to make it so...
Daily Kos started out a smallish group of like-minded mostly liberal/progressive folks who were looking for a place online to congregate and avoid the (already, way back in 2003) crazy of the ignorant and repressive Right. But it's grown some since the early days. kos is now a widely recognized leader of the progressive Left of the online persuasion. The active users are part and parcel of what kos built here, and it wasn't ever a case of "I built THAT", for kos it's always been "We built THIS".
But is being a bunch of unconnected, blogging code monkeys enough? It's not, not nearly enough. Yes, social media has risen over the past five years to dominate, well, pretty much everything. Look at major print and online official News organizations, they and their content are rife with the use of #Hashtags to drive viewers/readers to nearly everything. But social media only reaches those who participate in social media and that is still for the most part, the young. Those who are among the least-likely-to-vote-regularly cohort of the voting population.
We need to reach the OTHER sectors of the voting population. You know, John and Jane Q Public, with their 2.5 kids and (more and more these days) 3.5 part-time jobs between the two of them. These people are busy so bereft of free time that modern women with young children are likely the most sleep deprived people to ever inhabit the earth (outside of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba... but I digress).
These people are also the most unlikely to follow politics, even as a passing fancy. They not only don't put politics and voting at the top of their list, it's a miracle that it's even ON their list these days. The recent primary election in WA State, where every person has a ballot mailed to their official place of residence WEEKS prior to the election, and may drop the completed ballot back into their very own mailbox up until the very day of the election? In my county, Clark County, WA the voting participation rate was a meager and disturbing 28.1% of the already registered Voters.
For people who had to bring in the mail every day anyway,
and could have filled out their ballot and mailed it back in free of charge.
We need to do better.
We can do better.
I challenge each and every one of you who is NOT already a member of a Local Daily Kos Group to join one. Now. Today. Send me a personal DKos mail if you are confused about what one is or how to join one. If there isn't one already existing where YOU live? Be a leader, start a group and canvass for other Kossacks who live in your town or county to join you.
The fallout of the Netroots Nation decision to choose Arizona for NN2015 turned into an opportunity for the Daily Kos Community. Because kos decided to not sponsor NN in 2015 and put the resources he would have otherwise directed there into a more hometown direction, and said he would instead sponsor Regional Daily Kos Meetups in the summer of 2015.
For anyone who attended a Howard Dean or John Kerry or Wesley Clark or John Edwards Meetup in the wild and crazy 2003-2004 era, remember how you felt when you went to the first one and got to talk in real time with other people who felt like you? How you organized local precinct canvassing in the summer of 2004, hoping to get enough Democratic Voters to the polls to throw that bum, George W Bush, out of office and send him back to Texas (sorry Texans)?
THAT is what we need to purse. Action in each of our own communities. Contacting those who lack the benefit of the Daily Kos Community to build up their courage and knowledge base about those who would ask for our votes come November.
We're not asking you give up your job, or your hobby or even your Weekly poker game (should you attend one). Just once a month, meet with your Fellow Kossacks somewhere near where you live. Talk about what Community Action your group can take to help bend the arc of History towards Justice.
I'll close with a quote attributed to Margaret Mead and one from me, and urge you to accept what she said as fact and simply imagine yourself as a member of one of those small groups of people. Because you are, whether you know it, or not. And together? We CAN help change the World.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
--Margaret Mead

by susans ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
More than 30 Kossacks from Southern California met in Los Angeles to strategize on organizing. California is going to be our first roll-out of organizing an entire state. navajo talked about the importance of having a group in each congressional district and how important it is for everyone in attendance to help by looking for potential members in the comments of each diary at Dkos. navajo also talked about using the latest tools available from HQ such as Chris Bower's Action Team's email list and Faith Gardner and Jen Hayden's facebook interface to send invites to potential members in So Cal to join in. navajo will coordinate this. Google groups for email list servs were recommended along with facebook pages set up for each district as an organizing strategy.
Meteor Blades, a precinct captain for more than two decades, reinforced the effectiveness of old-fashioned, low-budget, face-to-face, boots on the ground local organizing as a time honored way to make things happen.
Vyan spoke about how politics is personal and one has to take on that mantle to engage and influence others.

After attending the 8/9 L.A. Kossacks meetup in Los Angeles, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to navajo, Meteor Blades, Vyan, susans, Shockwave, and everyone else who played a part in making the meetup a success. I am excited to be a small part of efforts to build Kossack groups in greater Los Angeles, and in all 435 congressional districts.
[...] If we vote, we win. Sometimes asking is all it takes.
[...] but don't forget there is also a lot of other electoral territory in SoCal where your help might mean the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.

65 Kossacks gathered at the home of Vetwife on August 9th to listen to four candidates in person and three other candidates skyped in. They each were allowed to speak for 10 minutes and then had five minutes to answer questions. Reverend Robert of NAACP AME Moral Mondays spoke along with veteran advocates, medical MJ leaders and an Occupier organizer. Gordon20024 deserves another Kossack Hero award for supplying ALL the food! Vetwife reports that several campaigns have been in touch with her for support since this meet-up.

Asheville's second Mountain Moral Monday protest was [Monday, August 4th] and it was inspiring to say the least. The Reverend Barber delivered a beauty of a speech that kept most people on their feet the whole time. Kossacks from far and wide met up for the event with a few of us meeting ahead of time and a few of us meeting at the rally.

by Mother Mags ♥ for Phoenix Kossacks and Baja Arizona Kossacks
Kossacks attended the meet-up from around the state, helped out by strong recruitment from Azazello and other Baja Arizona friends south of the Gila River.
[...] A week before the meet-up fewer than 20 people had registered, and we anticipated a big table where we could discuss specific races and issues in our communities. Then something happened, and the RSVPs more than doubled in a week. Thanks, Markos, for the recruitment tool!
navajo: "I had a great time attending this meet-up. I chatted with almost everyone individually and then spoke to the whole group about what Daily Kos can do for them in terms of organizing and helping their ranks grow. Not one person wanted to rehash the online dispute. Everyone wanted to move forward. What a great group! The evening was extremely enjoyable and I look forward to working with Arizona Kossacks on ACTION items in their state going forward."
