This is a series of diaries highlighting animal rescues around the country and noting and celebrating the work they do to help animals who have no voices but ours to speak for them. I have decided to make this a daily series because there are so many wonderful rescues out there who need human help and weekly just doesn't seem to be enough. I have long wanted to start a rescue but lack the resources or time available to do so right now so this is my attempt to do my part. I hope that these rescues will benefit from the kindness and benevolence of the community here at Daily Kos. They are amazing organizations and worthy of Kossack attention and care.
I am here, alive and all around you
I have no voice
In your trees, your air, your fields, your oceans, your world
I have no voice
I am a mother, a father, a protector, a soul
I have no voice
I can walk, crawl, sing, fear
I have no voice
You must be my voice

Adoption info is here
Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island. Little Shelter has been dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats and placing them into loving homes since 1927. Age, physical condition, and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a dog or cat whose life is in jeopardy. Through rescue from kill facilities, rehabilitation of sick and un-socialized pets, and a 100% spay/neuter program, Little Shelter hopes to end pet overpopulation and place all dogs and cats in loving homes. All Little Shelter pets receive the highest quality medical care and are spayed /neutered before adoption. Every potential adopter is interviewed and thoroughly screened to ensure the best quality homes. Included on the grounds is Sheltervale Pet Cemetery, which has been the final resting place for companion animals for more than 80 years. Little Shelter Animal Rescue has won Best of Long Island 5 straight years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) for Best Animal Shelter/Rescue!
Little Shelter is also a part of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals. Little Shelter is the only shelter not located in New York city to be included in the alliance.
There comes a time when a rescue or no-kill shelter is faced with the issue of what to do with long-term residents that have been overlooked for adoption for behavioral or medical reasons time and time again. When that time came for Little Shelter the answer was simple – provide a place where these animals can live their lives in comfort, with love and dignity.
In 2000, Little Shelter opened the doors to Little Shelter Sanctuary, a peaceful and serene facility on 110 acres in upstate New York. At the sanctuary, our dogs have more room, less anxiety, and undergo continual training, socialization and rehabilitation with the hope they will someday find an adoptive home. They live in apartment-style rooms with a home-like atmosphere, and the resident staff provides 24-hour care, making sure that each dog has their needs met with daily exercise, training and love. A popular pastime amongst all the dogs is swimming in the one-acre pond!
At this time, the sanctuary is only open to canine residents from our Huntington facility that need to be away from the stresses of shelter life. The sanctuary has a small resident population, allowing us to give those dogs individualized attention and has allowed us to be a true "no-kill" shelter.
Sanctuary Dogs
The mission of the Little Shelter is to adopt and save as many dogs and cats as possible. However there are many animals who have been overlooked for adoption due to behavioral or medical issues. Some dogs simply cannot adapt well to shelter life causing them to be overlooked for adoption. To meet the needs of these special animals Little Shelter opened the Little Shelter Sanctuary.
Resting on 110 acres of rolling hills, fields and streams in upstate New York, at the Little Shelter Animal Sanctuary, animals live in rooms styled more like apartments or homes to provide comfort and peace in a relaxing environment. Each dog has its own furnished room painted to suit the dogs personality and there is a 2 1/2 acre pond on the property for the dogs to swim in.
The animals who for various reasons are not adoptable are sent to the Sanctuary to live out their life in peace.
Thankfully many dogs are adoptable but just needed the extra space that the Sanctuary provides. These dogs receive continuous training, socialization, rehabilitation, and love until adoption no matter how long it may take.
Each dog has his or her own special needs, which makes it necessary that his or her family is willing to provide the love, patience, and commitment to help each of them adjust to their new family. Our sanctuary dogs are all wonderful, loving animals that just need a special someone to make their lives complete.
Dogs in the sanctuary are dubbed “Angels” and receive lifetime medical care when adopted through the shelter’s Save-an-Angel program. In addition, Angel adopters can request training experience shelter behaviorist to help with any initial transition problems or special needs of the animal.
If you would like to contribute to help with the costs of maintaining the property or want to help fund the cost of a new building to house these special animals, please contact: 631.368.8770 ext 26
Animal Soup Kitchen (ASK)
Through Little Shelter's ASK program, impoverished, sick, disabled and elderly pet parents are provided free pet food, vaccinations, spay/neutering and medical treatment for their animals.
Little Shelter is the first ever shelter on Long Island to provide free pet food, vaccinations, spay/neutering and medical treatment for impoverished, sick, disabled and elderly pet parents who do not have the resources to properly feed or care for their beloved pet.
The ASK program is designed to keep animals with their families who love them and has helped over 150 animals when there was nowhere else to turn. Since its inception, ASK has been a great success because these pet owners love their pets and are eager to learn how to better care for them.
Without help from the ASK program, these animals may have been surrendered.
Your Help is Needed… to maintain and grow this essential program as the cost of all the necessary components from food to medical care to transportation increases daily. We are asking you to be generous to the dogs and cats living in the most desperate situations.
You can help by making a monthly donation of either food or funds to the ASK program so we can continue to feed, and at times provide shelter and medical care to the neediest pets.
All food donated is used to feed only the most destitute dogs and cats and is never used to feed the dogs or cats who reside at Little Shelter. Be assured that only the most destitute dogs and cats will benefit from your generosity.
If you are interested in making a donation of food or funds please contact: 631.368.8770 ext 26
