Alison Lundergan Grimes's newest ad features a video of her at a rally, making the case that Mitch McConnell is the epitome of what's broken with Washington, DC, and outlining three meaningful priorities she would hope to accomplish as a U.S. senator: raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing that women receive equal pay for equal work, and delivering job training to veterans. Here's the ad and the transcript:
Grimes' new ad offers a reason to vote for her and against McConnell
ALISON LUNDERGAN GRIMES (AT RALLY): Mitch McConnell is the biggest part of the problem in Washington. After 30 years, Kentucky is ready for a senator that will put politics aside and put the people of this state first. We need a senator that will raise the minimum wage, ensure equal pay for equal work, and job training for our veterans. Mitch McConnell voted "no" on all of this. Washington is broken, and Kentucky needs a new senator.
This is Grimes's best ad of the campaign, especially in terms of defining why she's running and why she thinks McConnell needs to go. It doesn't aim to recast Kynect and turn it into a positive—something that I still believe is imperative given that McConnell is going to attack her for Obamacare no matter what—but it is leaps and bounds better than ads going after McConnell for
missing subcommittee meetings or featuring her
mocking McConnell's handling of rifles. Those could be elements of a larger case against McConnell—little details that support a broader message—but as standalone attacks they fell a little short of defining the race or the rationale for Grimes's candidacy. But this ad says why she's running and why she thinks McConnell should be retired. Hopefully Kentuckians are receptive to what she has to say.
