Not understanding that much about sustainable forestry I've only half heartedly been following Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden's bill for managing a couple million acres in Western Oregon. http://www.scribd.com/...
Wyden is supposed to be pretty good on things environmental and gets good grades from the League of Conservation Voters.
I'm pretty easy, tell me something is environmentally friendly and I'm all for it. I like the 100 year cycle to the cutting, the leaving of big old trees, and the leaving of a significant amount of dead and downed trees. I like wildlife, martens need old dead trees to make houses in, deer and elk need sunlight to reach the forest floor to make grass and bushes. I like the diversity of tree species and protections of water sources.
In reading about the bill on environmental blogs it appears not all are so wild over the idea, paticularly the Sierra Club and Oregon Wild. I can't think of a way to diplomatically say what I think of those two orgs so I'd best say nothing.
I know, you're saying what about the tree sitter, I'm getting there, hold your horses.
So anyway this ecologically gentle way of harvesting some of the timber from a stand while leaving the forest in such a way as to mimic a catastrophic event such as fire or whatever is way popular amongst those who stand to gain. People looking for a job, counties looking for funds (lots of money directly to them) lumber companies, even Foresters looking for something new to talk about.
In steps Rosenberg a big forest products company and low and behold a bunch of tree sitters from the same university as the profs who thought up this new mousetrap . Rosenberg was set to take a test drive of the new way of cutting.
Above Josh Eng. Mom sent him to school clean shaven and with a haircut now this is what she sees in the press.
I read a lot of environmental type blogs, and when I read this comment I just busted a gut.
