A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Like Mexican Music ?
Good morning. I like Mexican music, I really do. Living in the Southwest I hear it all the time and, well, it sort of grew on me. I'm not a musicologist, not an expert at all, but I know a little about some of the more popular styles and I thought it would make a good topic for CUA.
We'll start with Mariachi music. Mariachi (ma-ree-AH-chee) is what people all over the world think of when they think of Mexican music and it really is Mexico's national style. The term mariachi can mean the musical style, a band that plays that style or an individual musician. The sound originated around Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco. Sometime in the 20th century Mariachi music started showing up in Mexico City where it became the music of all Mexico. There's a famous plaza there called Plaza de Garibaldi where all the Mariachis hang out. The original Mariachis dressed in peasant clothing, white cotton pants and shirts and huarache sandals. Now they all dress like charros. A charro is not the same as a vaquero, or cowboy. Charros are horsemen from a higher social class, the ranch owners and horse-breeders. The have fancier outfits and saddles decorated with silver. The instruments are always the same. A Mariachi has at least two violins and two trumpets, bigger ones have more. The bass comes from a fat four-string bass guitar called a guitarrón and there's a smaller guitar called a vihuela. Some groups add a Mexican folk harp and a regular six-string guitar. The most famous Mariachi is the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Here they are performing two versions of what is probably Mexico's most famous, not to say clichéd, song, Cielito Lindo. Ay, Yay, Yay, Yay, Canta Y No Llores ...
The most popular style with the kids these days is Banda. Banda is just what it sounds like, brass band music, and you hear the oompah-oompah Sousaphone bass coming from souped-up car stereos all the time. There's a Banda style from Durango, but the original was Banda Sinoalense from that most musical state of Sinaloa. Banda groups are huge, sometimes 20 musicians. The most famous one, Banda el Recodo, has a bunch of clarinets, three or four trumpets, a couple of trombones, a sousaphone, two smaller tubas, a regular drum set and a separate bass-drum/cymbal combination called a tambora They have two lead singers. Here's a sample:
My favorite Mexican style is Norteño. Norteño (nor-TEN-yo) is cowboy music, the music of the border country. The the US we would call it Western music because the cowboys live out West. In Mexico, the cowboys live up North so their cowboy music is Northern music. Sometimes it's called Tejano, for obvious reasons, and the Tohono O'Odham call their version Waila. The instrumentation is much simpler than Mariachi or Banda. There's electric bass, drums, a guitar and a button accordion. The guitar is usually referred to as a Bajo Sexto which is a 12-string guitar. Actually, most Norteño guitarists play a Bajo Quinto, that's a 10-string. Some bands add an alto saxophone, but the accordion is what makes the sound. The most famous Norteño band is Los Tigres del Norte. The band was formed by members of the same family and although they were originally from Sinaloa, they didn't start recording until after the family had moved to San Jose, CA. I guess that makes them an "American" band. I don't know anything about their immigration status. They took their name from the famous general of the Mexican Revolution Pancho Villa who was known as "the Tiger of the North." They've recorded a jillion albums and had a jillion hits. Here's one of my favorites;
And finally, no survey of Mexican Music would be complete without a mention of the Grito Mexicano; the yell, the laugh, the cry, whatever it is. The iconic version is from a song by Vincente Fernandez. Vincente belongs to an earlier form of cowboy music called Ranchera. Here's the song, you know it you love it, Volver, Volver, 1976:
Awright amigos, that's it for this morning. Ya' got any news, any links, anything we ought to know about ?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
On Saturday 10/4/14, the Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks had the chance to have lunch with Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant.
...In 2012, Kshama ran as a Socialist Alternative candidate for WA State Legislature and surprised everyone by winning 29% of the vote. The momentum continued in her campaign for Seattle City Council where she boldly ran on a platform of fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage, rent control and taxing the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. In November she defeated a 16-year incumbent Democrat to become the first socialist elected in a major US city in decades.
Kshama Sawant now chairs Seattle City Council's Energy Committee which covers Seattle City Light, alternative energy sources, energy policies and air pollution regulations.
bleeding blue videotaped the address and the Q&A session that followed:

by susans ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
At the monthly meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, SEIU, airport workers and Daily Kos (represented by susans and Joshua Bloxom) presented them with a 48,000 signature petition demanding safer working conditions. Also present were representatives of CLUE, Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice, who submitted a letter of support to the board.
[...]
The SEIU organizers led a short rally outside of the building at One World Way after the meeting. SEIU represents people who do a lot of different jobs at LAX: they work in the terminals as wheelchair pushers, door openers, janitors, various other positions and on the ramp (outside). Some of them spoke at the rally, again in English and Spanish. They asked me to speak, something I was totally unprepared for. I briefly told them about DK and that I would be writing about the event and posting it online.
A special thank you to Josh, who took multiple trains up from Orange County to support airport workers and represent Daily Kos. It was great talking to you and I look forward to another opportunity to spend some time together.

by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
tmservo433 organized a registering-to-vote event for Ford County, Kansas in Dodge City to reach out to Latino voters there. He partnered with League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Ford County Democratic Party. 150 people attended to listen to John Thomas (KS House District 119 Candidate), Jean Schodorf (Secretary of State Candidate), Jim Sherow (US House, KS District 1 Candidate), Mark Low (Kansas House Candidate, District 115).
"LULAC volunteers sat at their table and handled registration after registration as people came to the event to listen to how they could change their state. We knew that not only were we helping to register new and first time voters, we were helping to bring a message into a community that has been ignored - and to help them take that message back to their friends and families."
This is a great example of reaching out to disenfranchised communities and helping them vote. Because If Democratic base voters turn out, we win. Can't be said enough. More regions need to do this.
