Remember those overweight adult Boy Scouts that tipped over a rock in Utah?
Well a woman from NY has gone one better. Traveling to many National Parks throughout the country she has painted on rocks then taken selfies and posted to various social media sites.
Some paintings are just grafiti as here.
Others are in more visible places
She paints in acrylic so it doesn't come off with the weather. Below the fold for some photos where she shows some skin.
The National Park defacer has the where with all to travel to most National Parks you might have heard of. Below she is in desert country.
She hit Rocky Mountain National, Zion, Canyonlands, J Tree, Yosemite, Crater Lakes, Bryce, Grand Staircase, I love the photos where she is crawling all over the petroglyphs in J Tree to get her selfie. Probably she is in karmic touch with those other artists hundreds, or thousands of years ago.
Petroglyphs are funny, not like funny ha ha funny but, well, odd. In the US we don't have much culture left over from thousands of years ago, but we do have petroglyphs. If you've traveled off trail in the desert much you come across them in unusual places. No signs, no X marks the spot on some map, simply a drawing from someone a long long time ago. Maybe of animals, or a hunt, or whatever. I like them, and I'm real careful not to erode the soil at their base or heavens to Betsy I sure wouldn't touch. I wish for them to last more hundreds or thousands of years. I sure don't like folks climbing over them.
I didn't mean for this post to wander into getting all sanctimonious and all but that's where I ended up.
So now people are looking for this young woman, Casey Nocket. I hope she's in a lot more hot water than those boy scouts but I doubt it. Ms Nocket is young and fashionably slim, she has the money to travel at will.
I have to give a hat tip to the person's blog I read all this on. Modern Hiker was on this story from the beginning and has provided info and screen captures. A great use of blogging.
Update:Thanks for the recs, went to bed at my usual late hour of 8:30 woke up to rec list and lots of comments. In looking at the big picture I guess some paint isn't as bad as all the roads and hotels we put in parks, or our greater footprint on the earth itself. I guess it was the sense that she felt it was ok to paint everywhere that kind of struck me funny.
Sat Oct 25, 2014 at 11:53 AM PT: I guess the young woman has turned herself in and is remorseful. Probably lawyers making negotiations with lawyers. Apparently being an instant celebrity for doing wrong is not a fun place to be. Hat tip to Pescadero Bill in the comments for the link.
