OK let me just argue the case for D. Wilson.
I know this isnt going to be terribly popular but on the other hand people should be able to argue their point.
On that day, we have the video of Mike Brown picking up the clerk like a little rag doll. This is a very revealing video. First it demonstrates that Mike Brown was a huge guy who was quite willing to use violence. By the way that clerk would have been justified in shooting Mike Brown in self defense.
So Mike Brown is walking along. The officer stops him. Brown swears at the officer, blocks the car door, reaches in, and punches the officer. The officer draws his gun and fires but apparently does not hit anyone. This interaction hasn't really been disputed. Again at this point, the officer probably would have been justified in shooting Brown in self-defense.
In the final interaction, Brown runs and the officer follows. There is ambiguity here. How far was Brown from the officer? Did the officer fire as Brown ran away? When Brown turns, was his intent to surrender or to charge the officer?
It is possible that the officers version of the story is correct- that Brown was charging him and he was close enough to the officer to present a deadly threat. It's also possible that Brown was trying to surrender. We don't know, there is no video, and apparently the eyewitnesses differ in their versions.
So we have Brown involved in 3 interactions that we know of, in 2 of them, it probably would have been justified to shoot him. In the third and final interaction there is ambiguity. Given the lack of evidence for the final encounter, and Brown's pattern of behavior that day, could a jury really convict the officer? Typically prosecutors do not bring a case unless there is a high probability of a conviction.
I personally believe that we should be outraged over the treatment of minorities by police. I believe that we should have body cameras on all police officers. But I am not sure that this particular case would lead to a conviction.
OK I know everyone will trash this diary. Have at it.
