In last week's Seasonal Thoughts I, we examined tales of Holidays Past where we were not feeling our best due to illness or injury. Tonight, another serious topic... the plight of the Holiday Sweater. Don your festive best and follow me below the ball of orange yarn after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Have you noticed it's all about that bass the Ugly Sweater? Actually, Ugly Sweaters have been a Thing for several years now, but being me, I hadn't noticed the trend until this year. December has always brought out the festive attire, and I love seeing everyone in their pretties and handsomes.
One of those December Traditions is the holiday sweater... cheerful, bright, patterned and one of those clothing items that sees the light only one month at max out of the year. Such a sweet thing, these sweaters with their winter prints, seasonal colors, the occasional star or ornament of tree or tasteful item on it.
And then, in typical fashion, someone had to outdo what they'd seen as Loudest Sweater Pattern Ever. And thus a perfectly nice tradition turned into Can You Top This?
Ugly Sweater parties became a Thing. There's even an NPR hashtag, #NPRUglySweaters, and when NPR's done the story and asked for input, you know we're very near sharks in sweaters.
Here's the thing though - at some point in the past, we LIKED those sweaters not because they were ugly, but because they were seasonally cheery. We wore them because we thought we looked nice and festive. Special for just a few short weeks. Sentimental, maybe, as we pulled out that item we wear twice a year, and check to see that it still fits. And now society's decided they're ugly.
Poor Sweater. What if it didn't know it was Ugly, and then found itself on Instagram?
Who will speak for the sweaters, I ask you? Who?
I have not posted any sweater pictures because I will not engage in #SweaterShaming.
I will, however, engage in shameless praise for my collaborator BeninSC for his decidedly NOT ugly formatting!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Yasuragi:
In Denise Oliver Velez's FP diary today, this comment by TarheelDem is a fine essay on the American class system and justice.
From elenacarlena:
I'd like to submit this comment by indycam, first and very funny comment in my diary from this morning.
I have another one for you: EarthquakeWeather's comment, in collardgreens's diary, They Booed Gabby Giffords. A good day for snark.
From BeninSC:
I have always been a fan of comments that give, that provide additional information and insight. This comment from first-time Daily Kos commenter, jillscherb7, meets that standard. A linguist, to boot!
From cohenzee:
With this comment, bobswern sounds the alarm on just how the Democrats Are helping to destroy whatever is left of the economy for us 99%ers.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
bobswern was on a roll today, sparking an entire thread that was so much more than a bunch of talking heads.
