My sister called me. "Your alma mater is in the news again."
Oh, boy. When I went there, Wellesley was regularly in the news for dissing then first lady Barbara Bush's commencement address. Mike Barnicle of the Boston Globe called us "whining, unshaven, feminist, spinster tartlets". Tried to find a link for that gem and failed. Sorry.
So now I learn that Wellesley College is whining again over a statue called "Sleepwalking". My sister laughed at me and how silly Wellesley girls can be. I'm kind of picturing a concrete statue such as the ones that are regularly pooped on by pigeons, perhaps a little abstract. I can't tell you exactly what I had in my mind's eye, but apparently the women at Wellesley put together an immediate petition to have it removed, complaining that it had "become a source of apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault for many members of our campus community,"
Then I saw the photo. I'm having trouble embedding it, so I'm just going to link to the story. Go ahead, I dare you to click on this link and tell me you wouldn't run or use your mace on this statue.
Statue of Man Causes Stir at Women's College
I now fully support my sister's plea to have this thing removed from campus. Who thought this would be a good idea? Why Wellesley? Seems a tiny bit like someone might be picking on poor old Wellesey yet again.
