I am still shaking from the equivalent of what it must feel like, to do an entire 8 Ball by yourself. But not quite that. More like what it must feel like, if you did an entire 8 Ball by yourself, and then was doused in lighter fluid, and then lit on fire. Yah. That sums up last night. I don't use or smoke drugs, Just to be clear.
I went to see a band play live last night. The Strypes. Small club in L.A. The El Rey Theater. Well, that was one of those nights I won't forget. I have had a few of those types of nights, and I have 4 decades of non stop live shows, literately hundreds of nights of live music tucked away in me mind. A couple of those nights are those so special, they are "those nights"
One of those was in 1978, and I was in the Navy in Virginia. I had only a couple of friends that was really into music, and one of them asked me to spend $200 on a flight to NY to spend $29.00 to see a band play for 39 minutes, to hear 18 songs. ( Or something like that) I think at that time, you could see 4 bands play for 3 or more hours for $20.00, so why would I spend so much money for about a 1/2 an hour ? So, I said no. He got so upset, he opened my cassette player, took out my "Supertramp" cassette, and threw it, and said "If you don't go to NY with me, I will never talk to you again" He was pissed. I changed my mind, we spent the money, and I ended up in a club in NY to see the Ramones blast off. Well that night sure changed my taste in music, and off I went. That was a fun night.
So was last night. It was one of "Those" nights. Almost the same deal, I got a call from another music junky friend of mine, and he said "You need go get a ticket right now and go see this band next week" I understand these call's and I don't 2nd guess them, when they come from the proven.
The Strypes play 90 MPH yardbirds, with Bo Diddley, with Lightnin Hopkins, with Levi Dexter and the Ripchords, with the Cramps, with the Undertones, with Jeff Beck, with, The Ramones, with The Zombies, with some Johnny Thunders, with ... Oh, it's hard to nail them down.
I am pretty sure these 4 17 year old's are going to ignite some much needed lightning into what I consider a pretty drab decade of diarrhea quality music. Coldplay? how was that possible ? They look and sound like Diarrhea, yet somehow have millions of fans. I think a new fire has been lit. I saw young kids at this show, and they were shaking after this ended.
So, it sure feels like I did an entire 8 ball "All by my self" last night.
