This is my first diary, so pardon any errors. A few months ago, people on Daily Kos started posting diaries about children who were eligible for reduced breakfast and lunch having their food dumped in the trash when they owed too much money on their account. I was appalled. Couldn't they at least be kept from going through the line? How could a 7-year-old child be humiliated like that? Then stories started appearing about people who swept in and cleared up the negative accounts at local schools.
That started me wondering. What was going on at the local elementary school where my church worked with children to provide supplemental food over the weekends? It took me a while, but I finally found the answer. Cafeteria workers were, at the direction of management, regularly throwing away the food of children in arrears, both shaming and starving them simultaneously. Turns out they were almost $1,900 in arrears. I sold some old coins I inherited from my grandmother, which netted enough to erase the debt. My church has now set up a fund to make sure it doesn't happen again. I wouldn't have done this without your information. So many thanks from me and the children at one Atlanta school.
