05/08/14 | A stunning 27 percent of U.S. military veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have difficulty putting food on their tables, according to a study published online Thursday by researchers at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System.
This is a disgrace! We should all be absolutely outraged at how we have abandoned our war vets!
How about restoring those long-term unemployment benefits??? wasn't that supposed to happen by now?
Food insecurity among veterans of the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
Subjects US military veterans who had served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since October 2001.
Food insecurity, or lack of access to sufficient food for a healthful lifestyle, has been associated with many aspects of poor health. While the economic struggles among veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been documented, it is unknown how commonly this population struggles to afford food. Our purpose was to document the prevalence and correlates of food insecurity among US veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Food security was measured by the US Household Food Security Module: Six Item Short Form. Demographic and behavioural health items were also included. Survey data were matched to medical record data from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Over one in four veterans reported past-year food insecurity with 12 % reporting very low food security.
“The United States has engaged in two wars that have been immensely expensive,” she added. “The estimates for the costs of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq range between $4 and $6 trillion. They went on for over a decade. I just think it’s unconscionable that such a sizeable proportion of our military that we sent to fight these wars are struggling to afford food.”
