Jumping off on Onomastic's fine diary here, (if you haven't read it, her diary is well worth it and well deserving of its place on the rec list. )I thought I would see if we could start a planning session or a movement or something. You see, it has often burned my buttons when people would line up OVERNIGHT to buy JUNK on Black Friday, but would refuse to wait in line to vote. With all that has happened in SCOTUS and Congress these past few years, I submit that we should be more determined to vote this election than to get that low priced outdated television. What do you think?
We all know about the mania that can hit our fellow citizens for something that is well hyped and they believe is exciting. For example, why is this a typical Black Friday Eve at Best Buy:
Or the release of the new Harry Potter movie?
How about waiting for the new iPhone?
And this is a typical voting day at the polling station in an off year election:
Why is that? What is really important to us?
Now ... what if ... we could get those kinds of lines, like you see in the first three images, waiting to vote this November? In an off year election? You know all those stupid voter ID laws that have been enacted to keep people from voting? What if the result of those was lines like this?
Or more specifically this:
And this:
All those people! All those women! In spite of all our laws, restrictions and efforts!
Actually, this is what has to happen. It is imperative that we make it clear: You try to restrict my access to the polls, I will overcome anything you put in my way. I will vote. And I will vote your sorry ass out. Period. End of discussion. You want to make it harder for me and mine? Fine. We have a history of overcoming obstacles. Like the soldiers at Valley Forge. Like the suffragettes who endured jail, beatings and rape. Like the marchers on Selma. We owe it to them. We owe it to the Freedom Riders. We owe it to Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. And we owe it to ourselves.
I think we should make voting an event this year. I think we should show up early and camp out if necessary. And if we did ... when the Theocratic Nut Jobs get up in the morning and see it ... it will pickle their peckers until they turn purple.
