New Iberia, Louisiana
So get this, on 3/2/14, Victor White III was fatally shot in the back while sitting in a cop car, with his hands cuffed behind him. Police claimed it was a self inflicted wound. The 22 year was stopped, according to reports, for suspicion of being involved in a fight at a convenience store he had just visited.
He was then searched and allegedly found to be carrying illegal narcotics. He was immediately arrested and transported to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for processing. Once there, police said he refused to get out of the car. As the deputy called for back up, according to the initial report, White pulled out a gun and shot himself in the back.
Needless to say, many questioned the police version of events. Two days ago, the Iberia Parish Coroner's Office released one page from the autopsy report, stating Victor was shot in the chest, and not much else of value.
State Police Master Trooper Brooks David said the investigation is still open. He also told us that troopers did originially believe the gunshot's entrance wound came from the back, however following the coroner's investigation, it was determined the entrance wound was from the front.
Right. Ooops! We were wrong in stating that while Mr.White was cuffed from behind, he shot himself in the back. What we are saying now is, Mr.White managed to shoot himself in the chest, while he was cuffed from behind.
David said State Police are still waiting on evidence in the case. He said he cannot comment further on the active investigation.
Of course he did. Almost seven months later and Victor White's loved ones are still searching for answers.
The official cause of death is still suicide.
update: The White family is seeking donations in an effort to have an independent autopsy performed. For those who are interested.
