The underlying problem here has been going on for years. The Justice Department studied the problem but went no further.
This unfortunately is one more example of our system not working, and not enough being done by our government to correct the problem(s).
A violent disturbance broke out involving more than 20 teens at the same Nashville juvenile detention center where more than 30 escaped earlier this week.
About 28 teens – some of whom had also escaped during Monday’s massive breakout – were involved in the latest incident that began Wednesday night, Tennessee Department of Children’s Services spokesman Rob Johnson said. The teens had gotten out of their dorm and were roaming the campus.
Video shot by Nashville station WTVF showed teens chasing and assaulting a man who appeared to be a staff member at the detention center. Photos published by Nashville newspaper The Tennessean showed teens in the detention center yard carrying sticks. One photo showed someone spraying a FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
What is causing these teenagers to want to break out of this facility? From 2010 Tennessean newspaper report:
Questions about sexual abuse at Woodland Hills and other state youth detention facilities arose earlier this year when a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice found that juveniles who had been in Woodland Hills reported one of the highest rates of abuse of any facility in the country.
What did the Department of Justice do other than study the problem of sexual abuse (in this case abuse by female guards of male detainees) at Woodland Hills?
Nothing. At least four years have gone by since the Justice Department study. This is weak, very weak.
