A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Are there any "superstitions" in your life?
These are way too close together!!!!
Votive candles from hell.
My wonderful neighbor near-daughter with green hair is fatally locked in the grip of votive candles and the influence they malevolently exercise over her life.
Of course I have some six or seven of the damn things in my house. The only good or bad luck they seem to bring me is restricted to aethestics. Either I feel they fit the decor or they do not. Otherwise I don't really notice their presence (my personal awe for the infinite isn't bounded by the baroque). Somehow my psychic sense of well-being seems oblivious of their supposed effect. Not so my nextdoor neighbor.
Her roommate recently moved out and my neighbor was aghast to find that she had left behind 4 votive candles hunched close together in the corner. "That's really bad ju-ju having them almost touching. I want them out of my house. Please, cat take them. I can't throw them out because that's bad also."
Will this candle really kill all the others?
Oh well, here come four more candles I can't use with the wicks burned too low to light easily. I thought that was the end of my votive exposure for a while. I was wrong.
The next day my own roommate and I were at FoodMaxx (if you don't know don't ask) and she suddenly appears clutching four votive candles in her hand. "No." I then told her of the "gifts" we had received the day before. She reluctantly put them all back except for the Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte ">Santisima Muerte one which she would not part from.
When my neighbor next appeared in my kitchen to share the sacred morning cup of Java she flipped a sh*t when she noticed the Santisima Muerte perched atop my microwave. "It will kill all the others." And with that she hastily left to return, I guess, to the relative safety of her own house where the votives are correctly ordered.
A pretty face, sure, but can you really help?
Sanitisma Muerte
Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte or, colloquially, Santa Muerte (Spanish for Saint Death), is a female folk saint venerated primarily in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. A personification of death, she is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. Despite opposition by the Catholic Church, her cult arose from popular Mexican folk belief, a syncretism between indigenous Mesoamerican and Spanish Catholic beliefs and practices. Since the pre-Columbian era Mexican culture has maintained a certain reverence towards death, which can be seen in the widespread commemoration of the syncretic Day of the Dead. Elements of that celebration include the use of skeletons to remind people of their mortality. The worship is condemned by the Catholic Church in Mexico as invalid, but it is firmly entrenched among Mexican culture.
I am in awe of the spirituality I found throughout Central America that still reflects pre-Conquest influence. I am less than in awe of FoodMaxx votive candles and their supposed influence over my life. Now waking under a ladder on the other hand....
What superstitution still has you in its grip?

by Thinking Fella ♥ for Four Corners Kossacks
There are meet-ups and then, there are EPIC meet-ups. The current designate always upstages the previous one. And that is precisely what Thinking Fella has done with this event. We were all green with envy when he announced it with just a few short weeks notice. He had a fantastic turnout anyway. Try to top this event. With 58 scenic photos of gorgeous Colorado and wonderful Kossacks, Thinking Fella showed us who's boss when it comes to meet-ups. He holds the trophy now. Who wants to take it away from him? Throw your gauntlet down at any time.
It's important to note that this terrific diary inspired 8 more people to join the Four Corners Kossacks. Again, Thinking Fella knows what he's doing. High five, buddy!
