Denver, Colorado - Republicans Use Force to Unseat Democratic Senator
The Republicans of Colorado have taken another important step in their plan to unseat Governor Adams and, thereby, continue the rule of Czar Peabody. Two Democratic Senators have been unseated this week, one being forcibly removed from the Senate chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
From today's editions of the Minnesota Labor World and the Missouri Scott County Kicker, we offer articles which discuss the ongoing efforts by Colorado Republican to thwart the will of the people as expressed in last November's election. As Senate Republicans unseat their Democratic colleagues by use of force, General Bell also appears ready to use force, if need be, to defy the orders of his new commander-in-chief, in order to retain his command.
The Kicker declares:
What the outcome will be cannot be foretold. But if Bell succeeds in holding his position Peabody will also have the troops at his back in unseating Gov. Adams.
And all this in a "free" country where the people are supposed to rule!

Denver, Colo., Jan. 19.-Senators Robert M. Born and Daniel Healy were expelled from the Senate Saturday on a resolution passed on a majority vote. Both are Democrats. Born's seat was given to James B. Dick and Healy's seat is vacant and Governor Adams will call an election to fill the place.
Delong, Republican, protested against the action and said it was unconstitutional.
Senator Adams stated that the matter will be taken into the Supreme Court on injunction proceedings.
Born refused to give up his seat, whereupon he was forcibly ejected by Sergeant-at-Arms Berry.
The Democrats fear the Republicans do not intend to stop until they secure a two-thirds majority in the Senate so that they can veto all measures unfavorable to corporations.
Healy made a statement in his own behalf in which he stated that an attempt was made to bribe him. He said that Saturday, during the joint session, he was called into a private room and was told that if he would vote for the confirmation of Judge Goddard he need have no fear of being unseated.
The deal whereby the corporations allowed the Democrats to seat Adams was completed, yesterday. It is said, when Speaker W. H. Dickson announced his committees in the House. Everything fell to the Peabody Republicans, the Wolcottites and the Democrats being left out in the cold. The corporation committees are now in full control of the House.

BELL MAY BE OUSTED BY GOVERNOR ADAMS
----------
Adjutant General of Colorado's Militia
May Receive His Walking Papers.

Governor Adams has Quietly Hinted that
His Resignation Would Be Accepted.
----------
Denver, Colo., Jan. 19.-It was reported about the capitol yesterday afternoon that Adjutant General Sherman Bell would receive his walking papers from General Adams. The Governor declined to speak upon the subject.
It was rumored in military circles last night and General Bell did not deny it, that he had refused to resign because his term does not expire till April 2 and because he is under bond to the War Department for the guns and ammunition, the property of the United States, now in the hands of the Colorado National Guard.
A long conference was held in the Governor's private office between Governor Adams and General Bell yesterday morning, and it is said, the matter of dismissing the Adjutant General was discussed. Governor Adams, according to the report, told Bell that he would require his resignation, but that if the document was not forthcoming an order relieving him from the duties of the office would be issued by the Governor.

Governor Peabody
``````````
The people of Colorado are being thoroughly initiated into the secrets of the infamous Dick law passed by congress in 1903, placing the president at the head of the state militia and subjecting every citizen over the age of 18 and under 45 to military service at the call of the president.
Last November Alva Adams, the Democratic candidate for governor, was elected by 15,000 over Peabody, the mine-owners' candidate. Considering that Colorado has less than one-third the population of Missouri and that Colorado is naturally a Republican state, this is a pretty handsome majority.
But Peabody and his crowd claimed that the Democrats stole the election. Think of it! Peabody and his militia and state machine in full control of everything, and yet the Democrats stole the election! It would be more reasonable to suppose that the Republicans stole Missouri last fall, for in Missouri the machine had no organized militia to drive the "disgruntled" from the state and intimidate others.
But Peabody said he had been robbed. He had the supreme court and the militia to back him up. Feeling ran high and open rebellion was threatened. But the "captains of industry" care nothing for the shedding of blood-so long as it is not their blood. With frantic appeals to the God of Justice and patriotism they catch some, and with their money they hire others to fight their battles. But THEY remain on safe ground.
However, in Colorado the temper of the people had reached the danger point, and a sort of half-and-half arrangement has prevailed. By throwing out the vote of Denver the mine-owners secured a majority of the state senate. The object was to insure the confirmation by the senate of two mine owners' supreme judges that Peabody appointed.
Gov. Adams the Democrat, was inaugurated governor Monday [Tuesday, January 10th] and Peabody is contesting his election. He has a supreme court of his own creation to back his contentions.
The inauguration of Gov. Adams was simple and without display. He indignantly refused a military escort, saying:
We have had too much militarism in Colorado recently, and I do not propose to begin my administration with a display of arms.
General Sherman Bell
``````````
One of the first acts of Gov. Adams was to demand the resignation of Sherman Bell, adjutant-general of the Colorado National Guard-the tyrant who murdered and drove out of the state defenseless men at the command of Peabody.
And then-
Sherman Bell defied the governor, who is supposed to be the commander-in-chief of the state troops, and refused to give up command of the army on the ground that he is a UNITED STATES OFFICER and has authority higher than the governor of the state.
What the outcome will be cannot be foretold. But if Bell succeeds in holding his position Peabody will also have the troops at his back in unseating Gov. Adams.
And all this in a "free" country where the people are supposed to rule! What has happened in Colorado can happen in any state. The people of St. Louis had a mild taste of it during the street car strike several years ago. the Dick law was not then in existence, else they might have tasted the real article.

The Battle Cry of Union
We are fighting for our rights, boys,
We are fighting for our homes,
Shouting the battle cry of union;
Men have died to win the struggle;
They've died to set us free,
Shouting the battle cry of union.
The Union forever, hurrah boys, hurrah!
Down with the gunthugs, and up with the law;
For we're coming, Colorado, we're coming all the way,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Union.
