I watched the opening show last night and thought... not bad. I love the fact there's at last a comedy show focussing on race, but, well, I still miss Colbert.
Don't get me wrong. Wilmore is funny. But he can't and probably never will be able to do what Colbert did--expose the reactionary madness at the heart of the modern-day conservative movement. Colbert's approach--speaking truth to power by spouting lies--can never be replicated.
And what about the second half of the show? It reminded me of the Bill Maher show where guests I mostly have never heard of spout off on subjects they really know nothing about. Colbert was funny enough that he could interview real guests and make the interview hilarious. Wilmore is depending on the guests to make the jokes which means he can only have on guests who know how to be funny. This pretty much eliminates anyone in politics you'd actually want to hear from.
Still... I'm not willing to write him off yet. Maybe with time. Keep hope alive.
