A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week with a Moral Monday.
Have you ever called in to a talk show?
I used to call talk shows a lot. I always wanted to be a radio personality, and I thought that being a frequent talk show caller was the next best thing... at least a way to get my voice out there and possibly get noticed.
But as you know if you ever tried to call a talk show, it's hard to get on the air, and I didn't get through very often. Most of the time I got the usual busy signal. Sometimes I got through, and the screener didn't like me. Sometimes I got through, and the screener agreed to put me in queue, but my cell phone ran out of battery before they put me on.
But I actually got on the air a few times.
I used to call sports talk shows in the 80s and 90s and get on the air right away because I was a triple threat. I was a female caller when they didn't get many of those. Also, I was a female caller who knew what she was talking about, which was more of a novelty in the 90s than it is now (women sports reporters were still rare and the whole "women in the locker room" issue was controversial). Sadly (and probably most important as I look back at it), I was a female caller with a nice voice, which allowed the hosts to imagine all kinds of things about what I looked like and make stupid comments about how they wished they had a wife/girlfriend like me. I always pushed back with "you don't know what I look like" and they always said they didn't care and it wouldn't matter. Sigh. If only that had been true..!
I got on C-Span one day during the 2000 campaign when some Nader supporter was being interviewed, to say that yes there was a difference between the two candidates and the two parties.
I went on to say that the only people I heard saying there was no difference, were people who were privileged enough to know they could ride out the worst of what might happen if Bush were elected. But too many of the rest of us faced real hardship under an R president and we did not have the luxury of believing there was no difference between the parties. It was an argument I had been having on line and on the street so I was passionate and concise. I woke up my mom to hear me on the rebroadcast. She smiled with pride.
One time I waited on hold for the better part of an hour when someone subbing for Randi Rhodes was doing a show about marriage equality and acting like all religious people were homophobic bigots. I called in and said I was a devout Christian who was a long time supporter and activist for marriage equality and the screener kept coming back to tell me I was in the queue and they were going to take my call and I held on and held on and held on through commercial breaks and other callers and various reassurances but they went the rest of the hour without ever coming to me.
Them's the breaks. Win some, lose some.
A while back I had a moment of triumph on the Stephanie Miller show. "Voice Deity" Jim Ward, far enough left for even the farthest of the left here at Daily Kos, was going on and on about how Snowden's release of classified information had not endangered the life of any American agents. But he was relying on official U.S. government announcements as evidence for that statement. So I called in and noted that since Jim was usually very suspicious of everything the government says and does, why was he so quick to believe them when they said no spies were endangered by the Snowden leaks? Isn't it possible that if someone had been in danger the government might not admit to it, in order to make it harder for certain people's cover to be blown? Stephanie loved my comment and gave me a sound effect and said I was the "smartest girl in the class". That was a really fun morning.
Have you ever listened to a talk show, about sports, politics or anything else, and ranted and raved from your couch or bed or car wishing you could get on the air and give the host a piece of your mind? Have you ever wanted to call but been unable to get through? Have you ever held on forever and then given up before they got to your call? Do you have a Mike Stark story to tell about getting on the air and getting the best of a conservative host?
Have you ever called in to a talk show?
