Seems like every day I read that some new domestic spying is revealed. The government always seems to come up with some justification for doing it, and for some reason government officials just can't live without it.
Yet for actions taken in other parts of the world, for instance Iraq and Afghanistan, our government is taken by complete surprise time and time again. "Oh look, after years of war, there are people in Iraq and Afghanistan that provide significant opposition to our efforts". Why was our government not able to predict the amount of effort it would take to seduce these countries more accurately? Where was the spying then? Or did they know they were lying to us (again)?
And speaking of domestic spying, I wounder if my wife would mind if I spied on her, continuously, over the duration of our relationship. It's not that I don't trust her, it's just that in the event she does do something that offends me, or is contrary to my vision of what a relationship should entail, I can penalize her. Using rationale for domestic spying similar to our government's, she should have no objection (especially if she is doing nothing wrong) and should happily allow it.
