Superbowl Sunday
As this publishes I assume the game is still going on. So I address this to the small select group that doesn't give a hoot about corporate football.
Mrs. side pocket took off yesterday for a two week visit to Quincy to visit the kids and primarily to spend time with the grandson. She asked if she could bring my cellphone. Good idea for a five hour drive including a portion through the Feather River Canyon with its waterfalls and rockslides. But the humor in the request is that she has never used a cellphone. I have handed her the phone sometimes when I'm driving and told her which buttons to press, which in all previous occasions have led to screens which I had never before seen and once even required removal of the battery to restore function.
I spent much of Friday instructing her, especially making and receiving calls. We called back and forth from my landline (yes, I have one) to the cellphone. I tried to get her interested in other functions: weather! camera! flashlight! full moon app! She said "Let's get the phone function right and leave it at that."
Of course now I will be without it for two weeks. I was forced to contemplate how it might affect me. I seldom use the phone as a phone. All my texts are to navajo so if necessary I could Kosmail. So it comes down to the camera. Whomever thought of that idea was a genius because now your camera is always with you. And uploading to
photobucket is one click, so that's what I use exclusively.
My plan for next week's KTK involves taking a lot of photos so I will take them with my big "real" camera and by next week I'm sure I'll have the mechanics of uploading them re-figured out.
So for discussion (OMG one team just scored, or was it the other?) do you have a cellphone? Is it a smartphone that does everything? Do you find it essential or mainly useful? Is your phone your camera? Could you live without it?
We should always have a photo, so this is what it looks like driving through the Feather River Canyon.
Latest report: she called me using the cellphone so it's all good.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
