I'm doing my part to throw a wrench into the TPP. I need the help of the DK community.
I've created a petition at WhiteHouse.gov, calling for President Obama to release the complete draft text of the TPP to the general public. I need as many signatures as I can get, at least 150 to start, in order for my petition to show up on the White House petitions page. From there, once the entire country will be able to see it, it has a chance to pick up momentum of its own.
Here's what you can do:
1) Sign my petition. Go to Release the Complete Text of the TPP. Fill out the short form on the right side of the page, then click through on the link in the email that arrives at your inbox. That's it.
2) Once you've signed, please share the link as widely as possible. If you Facebook, post a link to my petition to your wall. If you Twitter, tweet the short URL - http://wh.gov/... - to your followers. Encourage them to sign, then pass along the link via their own networks.
Following is the complete text of my petition:
Release the Complete Text of the TPP
President Obama has been aggressively promoting the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as a "trade" deal that would be very much in America's interest. Yet the negotiations between 12 Pacific Rim nations and more than 600 multinational corporations are being held in strict secrecy, with neither the general public nor Congress permitted to review any of its draft contents. Moreover, the President will soon pressure Congress for so-called "Fast Track" approval, which requires a straight up or down ratification vote, with little opportunity for debate, and none for amendments.
If the TPP is really as beneficial for America as President Obama claims, then he must allow us to see for ourselves. President Obama must release the complete draft text of the TPP to the general public.
Now I understand that the President almost certainly will
not release the complete text of the TPP to the public. It's been reported by those with inside information that if the general public knew how much horrible stuff it contains, the TPP would never see the light of day. President Obama understands this very well.
But the argument for full disclosure is a compelling one, so it's important to compel the White House to defend its decision to conceal the TPP's contents. Either the White House releases the complete draft text of the TPP, or they take the heat for stonewalling. Win-win.
Let's see if we can generate some serious public pushback against the TPP, by leveraging the White House's own social media. If my petition can attract at least 100,000 signatures by 25 April, the White House will be obligated to respond publicly. With enough public response, it could attract the attention of the news media. From there it could go viral. It's worth a shot!
