When Huckabee gave his 'Uncle Sugar' speech in January 2014, I wouldn't have given him a pass on it the way that MSNBC did.
Here's the text for those who are unable to access the video clip:
“If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it,” he continued. “Let us take that discussion all across America, because women are far more than the Democrats have played them to be.” |

No, he's not at all stupid. He knows that contraceptives have nothing to do with libido.
He mashed up Uncle Sam and Sugar Daddy, libido and reproductive health, and the
dog whistle came through loud and clear. In another era, he would have dropped the term "welfare mother" and his audience would have understood his indignation wasn't about white people.
Times have changed and welfare is practically non-existent today. Louie Gohmert once lectured the House for an hour about women who bear children because they heard it would get them a bump in their food stamps benefit.
Times have changed and we're still waiting for racists and bigots to die out and go extinct.
This man pretended to speak for women but I haven't noticed a word of concern from him about the girls who were molested in the Duggar case. They weren't old enough for birth control to be a concern, as far as I know. But what if they were and one of them got pregnant?
The boy would still be excused for making a mistake, the girl would have no right to control of her body or person, and interest in the unborn fetus would vanish at the moment of birth.
What do Huckabee, and people like him, believe about the female half of the population? At no stage of life will they ever have equal rights. This is a person who is not qualified to run for office as President of the United States, today.
