Today we are all celebrating religious freedom day. Truth be told it is solidly enshrined in the First Amendment and expanded by various Religious Freedom Restoration Acts. It is pretty much enforced too, unless you are a Native American and that isn't so much about religion as about the bone crushing racism that has pervaded all of the invaders' and their descendents' interactions with them.
This freedom, however, is only about limiting government impositions. Religions, internally, play by different rules and needn't countenance any deviations from dogma whatsoever. For Example:

It looks like John Dehlin, the guy who runs Mormonstories.org, who also supports marriage equality is about to get hammered for his apostasy.
Dehlin's hearing comes seven months after the church excommunicated Kate Kelly, founder of Ordain Women, a prominent Mormon women's group that staged demonstrations in a push for women to be allowed to join the faith's lay clergy.

Scholars say Kelly and Dehlin are the most high-profile examples of excommunication proceedings since 1993, when the church disciplined Mormon writers who questioned church doctrine, ousting five and temporarily kicking out a sixth person.
Same citation.
So remember, though the state must grant freedom of religion, your religion might not be anywhere near as liberal.
