I will make this short and sweet.
If you live in New York and are registered to vote, but not as a Democrat, you will not be eligible to vote unless you change your party enrollment by Friday, October 9. For those who are counting, yes, that is fully six months before the April 19 New York primary.
Those of you who do not appreciate the rich irony of an organization that calls itself Democratic treating would-be party members this way should read on below the fold.
It's incredible but true.
The good news is that it's not too late to do something about this outrage. The indispensible Rima Regas (serial filleter of David Brooks and owner of Blog #42) has complied a list of links to several phone banking and voter registration projects, as well as voter information resources, here.
Many thanks to willyr for breaking this down for incredulous me. And for providing a link to this 2012 NY Times article which answers the "how is this fair" question that this ridiculously early deadline begs.
UPDATE:
Just to clarify, the October 9 deadline applies only to currently registerd voters who are either unaffiliated (having no party) or registered with any party except the Dems. New registrants have until March 25 (for in-person registration) or a postmark deadline of March 30 (for mail-in applications).
