A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Like Classical Guitar ?
I can't remember when it was that he took the guitar down and said, "Here you go." Maybe I was 9 or 10, so I started pretty late. A gut-string classical Spanish guitar, a sweet, lovely little lady. Although I didn't know what the hell to do with it. The smell of it. Even now, to open a guitar case, when it's an old wooden guitar, I could crawl in and close the lid. Gus wasn't much of a guitar player himself, but he knew the basics. He showed me the first licks and chords, the major chord shapes, D, G and E. He said, "Play Malagueña, you can play anything."
That's Keith Richards, music director and guitarist extraordinaire for the Rolling Stones, describing his first guitar lessons from Gus, his grandfather, in his memoirs
Life1. The song Gus was talking about was originally written for piano by a Cuban named Ernesto Lecuona
2 in 1928. The term
malagueña actually refers to a style of music, from Málaga in the south of Spain. Most Spanish players have a couple of different
malagueñas in their repertoires and every classical guitarist knows an arrangement of
Malagueña de Lecuona.
Gus was right of course, if you can play Spanish guitar you can play anything. The terms Classical and Spanish guitar are almost interchangeable. Classical guitar originated in Spain where the guitar was a folk instrument, the instrument of choice for the Flamenco culture of the Roma people. The music took on a more classical sound and gained legitimacy among classical musicians when pioneers Francisco Tárrega3 and Andrés Segovia4 began arranging pieces by J. S. Bach, and others, for guitar. You'll notice that classical players hold the instrument differently players in other genres: a right-handed player holds his guitar on his left knee, elevated by a footstool. This position was Tárrega's innovation. The vid below is a recording of Segovia playing a Tárrega composition called Capricho Árabe. That's a picture of the composer, with his stool.
A lot of Spanish guitar music refers back to the time when Spain was part of the Caliphate and you can hear the call to prayer in some of the trills. Classical guitarists are all over the world now and they've taken the music in some new directions. Many guitarists still learn and perform the classics and Flamenco is still alive in Spain. There's a very popular genre called New Flamenco5 that takes the roots Roma music and adds more modern rhythms and jazz-style licks. The late Paco de Lucia6 was an early exponent of this style and it's the style of The Gypsy Kings7, a band composed of members of two Catalan Roma families who fled to France during the Spanish Civil War. Classical guitar players continue to arrange new pieces for the instrument. William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet8 plays Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca, note for note, on solo guitar and Brazil's Assad Brothers9 play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the whole thing, on two guitars. Here's a two-part video of them performing it. The quality these vids is not so good, but they're worth listening to.
So there you have it, a little music on this beautiful Tuesday morning. I like classical guitar and I've shared some of my favorite artists and their work. So what's up with y'all today, got anything to share, any interesting links and ...

Koscadia, at it again.
We had a lovely meal together yesterday. The mood was a bit somber as we thought of our absent [Koscadia] friend, Cedwyn. The news of Cedwyn's death did not come until afterwards.
At our lunch, I received a special gift from ericlewis0 intended for both me and Ann, wrapped and framed by llbear. It was the original artwork for the Animal Nuz cartoon of Catwyn receiving her quilt. [Photo can be seen in Sara R's diary]

DKos Asheville's Roadtrip and Two-Day Retreat to Roanoke, Virginia
From randallt:
After seven successful and engaging meet ups, DKos Asheville's core members decided to take our next gathering on the road. The first reason was that our chef and benefactor for all our meet ups has been Gordon20024 and we wanted say thanks by traveling to be with him instead of having him drive to be with us. We asked and he was thrilled and so the idea was born. Another reason is that it offers us the opportunity to meet more Kossacks from around the region including Virginia and parts of North Carolina to the north and east of us.
Grow our network, grow our community, help win elections.
