Quick diary here. As many of you know, on 1/29, Diarist Jen Hayden posted this diary about the ridiculous arrest of Deputy Public Defender Jami Tillotson while she was representing her client in a San Francisco courthouse. In essence, Tillotson was in another court room working on another case when it was brought to her attention that her client was being questioned and photographed in a hallway. Tillotson then left the court room to inform her client that he did not have to answer the officer's questions and that the officer had no right to be photographing him and his friend.
This is what happened next:
We decided to do something about it, and you can too, over the fold.
We have created the SFPD Constitutional Education Fund, a project to deliver a copy of the United States Constitution to every non-administrative officer at the San Francisco Police Department. A buck will get us a pocket constitution to send over, care of those the police are supposed to protect and serve. The campaign also contains the contact information of the politicos who might be in a position to do something about this.
By doing this, we aim to publicly demonstrate that this behavior is unacceptable, that we are paying attention, and that anyone in law enforcement who acts like this deserves to be shamed and hopefully removed from their duties.
If this can happen in a courthouse, to a white lawyer, one can only imagine what is happening on the streets of Ferguson, New York, and everywhere else. Please consider a small contribution and help us spread the word! Thank you.
