NPR reports that the Obama administration may ask Congress for a three year Authorization for Use of Military Force, this time against ISIS. link. This is a bad idea for several reasons.
First, our getting involved again in Iraq (and Syria too, I guess) is EXACTLY what ISIS wants. They're recruiting the losers and wannabes of the Muslim (and non-Muslim) world to come and fight the Great Satan, i.e. us. Al-Qaeda is fading and ISIS is taking its place. If you want to fight the United States (which isn't very popular in the Arab world), ISIS will be more than able and willing to provide that opportunity.
Second, we need to recognize the limits of military force. An army can overthrow a government. An army cannot prevent individual acts of barbarism.
Third, war must end someday. We can't let ourselves be trolled into war by some murderous thugs no matter how brutal they are. This doesn't mean we have to do nothing ... see below.
Fourth, who are we gonna attack? ISIS appears to be getting funding from Qatar -- are they on the bomb list now too? I suspect not, and there will be some of the usual excuses that we've used to ignore barbarism in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, etc. that well be deployed here. It would be pretty easy to make life for these wealthy patrons of terrorism pretty miserable without actually bombing anyone, but again, that would be going up against money, and that isn't gonna happen.
Fifth, how is this gonna be paid for? With more tax cuts for the wealthy, George Bush style? If something is important enough to go to war for, it's important enough to levy taxes at WW2 levels on our wealthy, as well as a war profits tax on all the military contractors/pirates that swarm around every war.
