Tom Cotton, Republican Senator from Arkansas with a mere two months experience in Congress, penned a letter to the leaders of Iran, cautioning them that the President of the United States does not have the constitutional authority to reach an accord on Iran's nuclear program. This letter was signed by 46 other GOP Senators, often without closely examining the message.
This brings the nature of our dysfunctional Congress to a new and dangerous low. And, it may be against the law. The Logan Act, enacted in 1799, is a federal law barring unauthorized citizens (and the last time I looked, Senators are citizens) with foreign governments who have a dispute with the United States. It also adds to the ploy by House Speaker, Boehner to undermine President Obama's influence in negotiations by inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to Congress on the subject.
The irony of Cotton's letter is that negotiations with Iran are not unilateral between the U.S. and Iran. In fact, there are five other countries involved in this process. So, the President will not have sole power to affect a solution to Iran's nuclear program.
The "Matadors of the GOP" think they have inordinate powers over the "bull" of global politics.
