A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week with a Moral Monday.
Do you enjoy any unusual comfort foods?
Now that spring is here and the winter blues are behind us, I hope I can get back to healthier eating.
Over the last two months I have been reaching way too often for the unusual comfort foods I grew up with.
My grandfather is responsible for two of them.
One of his favorite snacks was to mix equal amounts of softened butter and pancake syrup in a dish and then spread it on Club crackers. He used to eat it before bed when he came from working the late shift. Sometimes I would crawl out of bed and go downstairs to join him, and he would give a few crackers to me.
I don't have "syrup crackers" very often in the wintertime, but I have been overindulging in something I call "Big Daddy Rice". Basically it's just steaming hot white rice, with lots of butter, a little sugar, and evaporated milk. Creamy sweet and almost like a dessert, it warms me up on more than a physical level. Coming home out of a howling blizzard to a hot bowl of Big Daddy Rice helped me make it through this record setting harsh winter.
I've tried making it with brown rice and olivio and sweet and low and skim milk, but the effect is not the same!
I also ate waaay too many bologna and cheese sandwiches this past winter. They bring back memories of walking home from school at lunchtime for a sandwich and a cup of soup in cold weather. (The "soup and sandwich, soup and sandwich" commercial was popular then.) Though I usually splurge on high quality cheese at other times, this sandwich is about generic American cheese and nothingspecial bologna on plain white "air bread". With real mayo.
I've tried using all beef deli quality bologna with gourmet cheddar cheese on 12 grain bread with reduced fat mayonnaise, but the effect is not the same!
I do not think these are the standard comfort foods most people enjoy, like mac and cheese and pancakes and mashed potatoes, although the rice is hot and starchy.
The way they taste is yummy, but the taste is not the source of comfort. They are comforting because of the memories they evoke, of eating with my grandfather in the kitchen of the house where I grew up. I don't even remember we talked much. It was just good to be with him. He was my surrogate daddy since my biological father was not in my life at all then. Just being in his presence made me feel secure.
The bologna sandwiches evoke memories of my grandmother, who made my lunches when I came home at noon on school days. My mom, a single mother at a young age, was fortunate to live with her older sister and her parents, so that other adults were able to take care of me while she was out working, or hanging with her friends.
So the foods themselves are less important than the memory of the loving home where I spent my first few years of life, the grandparents who raised me like their own child, and the only time in my life when I was safe, protected, cherished, and wanted for nothing.
I can only recapture that now through the sense memory of syrup crackers, bologna and cheese sandwiches, and big daddy rice.
Lots of folks reach for pasta, pancakes, baked goods or potatoes when they think of comfort food. But do you or your family have specialized comfort foods that are a little out of the ordinary? What memories are associated with them? Have you tried to update them or make them healthier? How did that work out?
Do you have unusual comfort foods?

We had a fantastic meet-up that will energize me for months to come. We had 80 of the most intrepid Texans to date. They braved extremely rare ice storms north of Austin. Bridges and major highways into Austin were closed the morning of our event.
The extreme weather was truly a problem but it was nice to see those who were able to show up. And based on the comments of the two diaries below, many attendees were equally energized and empowered.
All and all, it was a great day! Thanks to nomandates and Chrislove for helping to organize.
FTR: I was in Austin at exactly the same time in 2013 for the inaugural Texas Kos State Meet-up. I got a sunburn at the Zilker Park Kite Festival the next day. It was a gorgeous sunny day.
Here's one photo:

DKos Asheville's Roadtrip and Two-Day Retreat to Roanoke, Virginia
From randallt:
After seven successful and engaging meet ups, DKos Asheville's core members decided to take our next gathering on the road. The first reason was that our chef and benefactor for all our meet ups has been Gordon20024 and we wanted say thanks by traveling to be with him instead of having him drive to be with us. We asked and he was thrilled and so the idea was born. Another reason is that it offers us the opportunity to meet more Kossacks from around the region including Virginia and parts of North Carolina to the north and east of us.
Grow our network, grow our community, help win elections.

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
