On April 22, 2013 we received the news that Jonathan Wayne Broyhill had stabbed our friend Jamie Kirk Hahn. She subsequently died from those wounds.
The background is this...
We worked with Jamie fundraising for John Edwards and we adored her. So vital, involved, and positive was Jamie! To her nothing was impossible if the reason was right.
We also met and grew to love her future husband Nation Hahn. Also involved with fundraising, also a total positive force for good. To know Nation is to totally love him and his devotion to trying to do good for mankind.
So these two linked up, married and had a good and productive life. We couldn't attend their marriage because my hubby's Dad lived with us then and we couldn't leave him, even with one person to tend him. It was too much.
But we met with them both, had lunch at a local fish joint and were ecstatic to be spending time with them again. Jamie's laugh hadn't changed, it was still huge and authentic, Nation was still adoring Jamie and being so happy in their life together.
So Jamie founded a firm, Blue Skies Strategy, and worked on former Congressman Brad Miller's campaign. She hired Jonathan Broyhill to oversee funds. Apparently he took in excess of $45,000 of those funds, lied to Jamie and Nation about physical problems, and wrote checks to himself.
As it is reported, Jamie intended to approach Jonathan Broyhill about these issues while at dinner at she and Nation's home. While Nation was upstairs changing clothes Jonathan Broyhill stabbed Jamie 24 times. When Nation came downstairs to help he was also stabbed.
According to reports Jamie was able to run to a neighbor's home for help. Nation followed her. Mr. Broyhill stabbed himself and awaited arrest.
We lost Jamie. Nation lost his beloved wife Jamie. Her family lost her. She is forever gone.
The trial has begun with the defense pleading Broyhill wanted to injure himself, which he subsequently did. It would seem he was very remorseful about his prior actions regarding financial decisions he made. To steal money. From someone's campaign.
It's all here for you to read.
We lost a bright and shining star. Rest in peace Jamie. We love you.
