Indiana's RFRA law clearly has the potential to rehatch legalized discrimination, this time against the LGBT community. However, the bigger picture is that religious freedom laws typically either enable firms to get out of a federal obligation to workers, such as offering birth control coverage to employees, or a divide and conquer issue, where firm/person A has the right to not serve or otherwise dominate person B. Either way, we don't have the right to not work on Good Friday.
I propose that our overworked Christian nation have a national holiday today on Good Friday. We can call it "American Faith Day", a national day to reflect on one's faith, or lack of faith.
Let's not cede religious issues to Republicans. We can create wedge issues too, and give our workers some needed time off in the process. Good Friday is a national holiday in Mexico and in much of Latin America, so it will be hard to convince Latino voters that you are truly for religious freedom if you don't support this ("I am a born again Christian, but I oppose American Faith Day. Back to work"). Then let's roll out Easter Monday on 2018!
