A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What Shape Are Your Eyes in?
Do You Need Corrective Lenses?
Take the Poll Below!
So in a short while I'll leave you all to talk among yourselves while I go get my eyes examined.
I realize some of you think having my head examined is also in order, but one deficit at a time, please.
I'm afraid this is the year I'm going to be told I need glasses to drive. The reading glasses that I used to only need for fine print are now a constant necessity for near and middle range distance, and now that distant vision is also getting a bit blurry I resent this mightily. I suppose this is inevitable when (as pNut delights in reminding me) I am pushing 60, after all.
This year I'm going to ask to try soft contact lenses so I can quit with the on-and-off business with the reading glasses all day long. Maybe while I'm at it I'll get the cosmetic ones. There's lots of choices nowadays, and none as permanent as a tattoo.
The interesting thing about contact lenses now is that they can also correct astigmatism, which I also have. They even have moisture-enhanced lenses for people with dry eyes, which I also now have. (Sheesh, everything's starting to fail!) You can wear one lens for distance vision and the other for close-up as my seestah does, or you can try a variety of multifocal lens combinations.
New eye surgeries are coming along as well, such as the KAMRA corneal inlay lens that corrects presbyopia. This surgery has been used successfully on over 10,000 people worldwide and obviates the need for reading glasses, but was only recently approved by the FDA for use here. Enthusiasts claim it will reduce the need for reading glasses for millions of middle-aged folks.
The inlay uses a pinhole effect to create greater depth of focus, allowing clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. The procedure involves the implantation of an inlay into a femtosecond-created lamellar pocket, where the polymer inlay (3.8 mm in diameter, 10 µm thick) is inserted. The flap is replaced over the inlay to hold it in place without sutures.
Intriguing as this sounds I'm not interested in beta-testing someone's new eye surgery, so I'll wait and watch on this one.
Also being researched is the Ocumetics Bionic Lens, which would place a tiny bionic lens into your eye resulting in perfect vision. The claim is it's only a matter of time before technology can correct all our vision to perfection, but this particular fix won't be available until at least 2017.
Meanwhile I think going with contact lenses is going to be plenty exotic for me.
Which one do you think I should get?
I already look like the one on the upper left most mornings....

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
