Everywhere I go I see this quote by Bernie Sanders:
Finally, let understand that when we stand together, we will always win. When men and women stand together for justice, we win. When black, white and Hispanic people stand together for justice, we win.
It makes my blood boil.
Not in a good way.
What about Asian Americans? Did we get grouped with white people as the "model minority?" When did we stop being counted as people who can stand together for justice? Bernie supporters probably find this petty of me. It's a slip of the tongue, an oversight, or something else silly, but Bernie isn't the only one who does this. In conversations about race in America, people frequently talk about white people, black people, and sometimes Hispanic people like there are no other kinds of people. Asian Americans should have a place at the table too. We are not white. Sometimes, we're the largest group of new immigrants. Candidates who can't remember this just aren't serious.
In 2012, 73% of us voted for Obama. Ignore us at your peril.
