Overlooked in the discussion about whether or not Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen is the issue of his dual citizenship. Apparently it was not until the Dallas Morning News in August 2013 published the fact that he was both an American and Canadian citizen did he apparently take steps to revoke his Canadian citizenship. In May 2014, the process was formally completed.
There are valid reasons why people hold dual citizenship. But for someone like Cruz who frequently emphasizes his patriotism, it is surprising that he retained his Canadian citizenship until it was revealed in the press — unless he had a valid reason.
Wouldn’t a super patriot like Cruz have insisted that his American citizenship was so consequential that he didn’t need to be a citizen of another country?
Why did Ted Cruz retain his Canadian citizenship for 45 years? Maybe it was “inadvertent,” his excuse for not reporting his low interest loans for as much as $1 million from Goldman Sachs and Citibank in 2012 as required by the Federal Election Commission.
