I teach Social Work in a southern university, and as an assignment for one of our classes asked students what they wanted the next POTUS to address. Here is what one student wrote:
-
Gun Control/Homicide Control
- Although this is a topic that is commonly addressed by POTUS's, I would like the next POTUS to address it from a standpoint that addresses the other forms of homicide and violence as well. I think that this is important because it would serve as a logical means of careful analyses of options and efforts to address homicide in America, without unnecessarily stripping away freedoms.
I replied to him that I’d never heard the term “homicide control” and thought it was a brilliant framing of the issue we are facing. It isn’t about controlling guns, it is about controlling homicide.
Of course we also want to deal with accidental deaths and suicide, but as a frame homicide control seems pretty good.
What do you think?
