It may seem strange to suggest this, but many, if not most of those who support that other guy are not terrible human beings. They love their families, they serve their country, they make sacrifices just like us.
We are all victims of a “rigged” system. Not rigged by some mysterious, evil cabal, but by the ordinary workings of our political system and the needs of capitalism. It’s no one’s fault that the media needs viewers/readers to survive, or that the surest way to grab attention is to fire up our emotions. It’s no one’s fault that we find easy shortcuts or rely on “instincts” when we form beliefs and opinions. If our country allows us to be free, we must accept that we are free to make bad choices.
Must we condemn those who have made, in our opinion, a very bad choice? Or is there another way forward, a way that makes us all stronger?
