Whether Trump threatens to sue his accusers because he wants to intimidate any more women who might come forward with their stories of how they were assaulted by Trump, or if his goal is to ruin these women financially by dragging out court proceedings for years, he may be looking at more than he bargained for because
… some prominent First Amendment attorneys are vowing to defend Trump’s accusers pro bono, or free of charge. Ted Boutrous of the law firm Gibson Dunn and Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe have thrown their hats into the ring on social media, and Boutrous says there are others willing to follow suit.
Lawyers are offering to defend Trump’s sexual assault accusers for free.
But Trump’s lawsuit threats are still intimidating to women who might consider coming forward.
The above article goes into great detail about many of the possibilities that might result from all this litigation.
Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe, a constitutional scholar and lawyer appeared on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell last night. He is one of the lawyers offering pro bono services to Trump’s victims. When asked why he is offering his service at no charge, Professor Tribe didn’t mince his words:
I thought it was about time that the use of lawsuit threats by a bully like Trump should be met, and met strongly, because a lot people, a lot of women might be deterred by his threats even though, he often doesn't carry them out. They might be afraid to come forward.
Also during the interview, Professor Tribe was asked if the Access Hollywood recording where Trump confesses to the behavior these women have come forward and accused him of could be used as evidence in the cases, he replied:
Sure. It certainly would. It's an admission by a party to the lawsuit, by the plaintiff. And he's going to have one hell of a time, especially with discovery, saying that he was lying and bragging to Billy Bush and others. It's really an extraordinary idea to first admit that you grope women and victimize them, and then to threaten to sue them when they say that your admission was true. And when he finally said that they're all lying, then more women decided that they were going to come forward. And there are probably plenty of others. I suspect that he's a serial abuser. Most people who commit various kinds of predatory acts don't just stop with one or two or twelve. And the women who might be afraid to come forward should know that lawyers like me are going to be willing to defend them and the journalists who reported their stories without charge.
Looks like Donald Trump is going to have another bad week, and many more to come. Here’s the link to the video of the interview: Lawyers offer Trump accusers free legal help.
