This is the answer I wish Hillary Clinton had given Chris Wallace at the last debate, and it is even more appropriate now.
“Thank you for asking, again, about my emails. This question has come up almost daily for the last 600 days, and I have provided all the answers I can. I have apologized for poor judgment in using a personal server, and no evidence has surfaced, after lengthy and costly investigations, that I did anything deliberately harmful to US security.
“I think we should focus, though, on why Republicans in Congress and their media allies have made sure that this question has kept coming up for 600 days straight. Is it out of a concern for ethics and transparency? If so, they should have spent at least 600 days investigating the disappearance of nearly a million emails within the Bush-Cheney administration, emails that might have shed light on the Iraq War debacle. Is it about responsible government? Then they should have been diligent in investigating the causes of the financial meltdown that led to the Great Recession in 2008.
“American voters are sick and tired of having their government bogged down in these unproductive witch hunts instead of working to solve problems that affect people’s lives. How have Congressional Republicans responded to the growing pains we are seeing in the Affordable Care Act? Instead of deliberating about how to fix it, they take symbolic vote after vote to repeal it. How have they tried to address the increasingly obvious threats from climate change? Instead of crafting policy, they’ve subjected hardworking, reputable scientists to expensive and time-consuming investigations — yes, of their emails, among other things. And now they are promising on “day one” of my administration, if I am elected President, not to work together with me to solve the nation’s problems, but to renew their investigations with ever greater force.
“So I say to the voters, if you are sick and tired, as I am, of these pointless partisan attacks, it is time to put the Congress under new leadership. There is a major party that does want to move the country forward, instead of miring us in the endless quicksand of politically-motivated investigations. Vote the Democrats into power in November.”
