The 5th Congressional District in NJ, being fought for by Josh Gottheimer, and currently held by Republican Scott Garrett has been a Republican held seat in the US House since 1933, and which voted Bush 52%— 45% in 2000, Bush 57% — 43% in 2004, McCain 54% — 45% in 2008 and Romney 51% — 49% in 2012 has now been changed from Lean Republican to a Toss-Up by Cook Political Report.

A Polling Report done for the House Majority PAC, by Garin-Hart-Yang of likely voters had a Gottheimer lead of 7% (48% Gottheimer versus 41% Garrett), up from trailing by 8% in an August poll (Garrett 50% to 42% for Josh Gottheimer). Gottheimer’s favorable rating has increased (30% favorable to 14% unfavorable) while Garrett’s has dropped 35% unfavorable to 32% favorable with 49% of those polled saying it is time for a change in the district. Gottheimer’s name recognition has also increased from 34% to 63%. (Clinton is leading by 7% in the most recent poll, compared to 5% in the early August poll).
