So I came across a page that allows your to write your state electors. And the page with provide you with their direct email addresses. I live in Colorado, which went for Hillary and yet two of our electors are leading an effort to break free from having to vote for Hillary and instead vote for a compromise. As much as it upsets me to see these votes go from Hillary, the danger of Trump is just too great. I encourage all to write letters and be heard by their electors. The fate of the nation, and perhaps the world, depend on the votes of 538 people which meet on Monday December 19.
My letter is also posted here.
Without further delay, my letter to the CO electors.
I, like you, am a concerned citizen of this country. In the weeks leading up to the election, I was knocking on doors for Hillary (as I did for Obama in 08 and 12) in the Westminster and Arvada area of Colorado. I was proud of Colorado that she won here, and she won with the expected margin and similar to Obama's 2012 victory here. But this was clearly not the case in many states. While Hillary has gone on to win the popular vote by more than 2.8 million as of the time I am writing this (Dec 14), it was Trump who has secured the electoral college, as I know you are aware.
Since election day, it has been an emotional roller coaster ride with one story after the next regarding the President-elect's actions. None of it has been encouraging, but the time between Nov 9 and Dec 19 has been very educational. Learning that he is turning down daily intelligence briefings is one of my biggest concerns, because I can see the writing on the wall here. A previous president also mishandled a certain memo regarding Osama bin Laden's determination to attack and the result was Sept 11. How many terrorist groups might slip by Trump's notice? Does the world really need an ISIS v2.0? He says that this VP and generals are getting the briefings, but that just isn't sufficient in my book and I fear that he doesn't know how to keep this nation safe.
Trump's failure to sell off his businesses is another major concern. It isn't like he has one factory in Michigan or something, he band is global. And now to hear that Turkey has arrested some partners of Trump's in an effort to blackmail the US government is very disturbing. How long before some nation or disgruntled group uses violence as a motivation for US action? Will terrorist groups start attacking Trump businesses, making his hotels unsafe to stay in? Will the nation have to pay for and protect his buildings around the world?
Trump continues to prove that he's an international political disaster. There are the blunders he has made due to his own inexperience such as the hot water Trump as put us in with China after talking to Taiwan's president and disclosing it on Twitter! And then there is Russia! This is much more than a blunder. At the very least we know they tampered with the election in an effort to support Trump. Could there be more? A black cloud looms over the incoming administration unlike any previous incoming administration. And in turn Trump appears to be picking some very pro-Russia cabinet members (as he did for his campaign staff). It is almost like pay-for-play -- Russia helped him win by leaking unfavorable Hillary/DNC emails and in turn he is helping them. I am all for having good diplomatic relation with nations like Russia or Cuba because the world seriously need less hate and more understanding, but when it looks like only a handful of people would (monetarily) benefit from Trump's actions, it is extremely concerning.
It is quite possibly that never before has the role of the electoral college been so big. Not only do you have the weight of the nation on the shoulders, but the weight of the world. I know the electors of CO are leading an effort to find enough votes to stop Trump. As a Hillary supporter in a state she won, I endorse these actions. And I feel you have all the rights to overturn the election. Many articles I've read site the Federalist papers, specifically #68 as making it the duty of the electoral college to prevent someone like Trump from taking office. Trump's actions are dangerous and disruptive to the world in the very least, border treason and may be destructive at the most.
I am aware you are considering many options. I would only hope you are also considering Hillary as an option (which, I'd assume would be difficult to pass among GOP electors, but we know she is qualified and has the support of most of those who voted on election day). Also, perhaps consider (if possible) a split ticket as a deal. Not that I'd like to see a Clinton/Pence, Sanders/Cruz mix, but in compromise, maybe this could work as well.
