I posted the comment below in a diary by BP in WA, who suggested I repost it as a diary. Thus, here is what I would like to express to members of the Electoral College in the hope it may provide them with clarity in their task:
I spent most of my adult life serving the nation and protecting our ideals as they are written in our Constitution. I served without any expectation of gratitude, or fame, or wealth. I served in some adverse, or austere, or outright dangerous conditions because doing so was necessary. I’d do all of it again because I believe in the whole nation, not just the parts that I agree with.
The task you have before you is short and simple, but it’s certainly more momentous than anything I did in my 25 years on active duty. It’s quite literally an opportunity to protect the nation from grievous harm, and that makes this a task equally important to anything ever done in combat in the defense of the nation. It is that serious.
When you perform your task, please remember its original intent as spelled out in the Constitution. This is no time for partisan politics, nor is it a time for comfort, nor for safety. It is a time to do what is right because it is right, and thus fulfill the sole purpose of your office as it was created 227 years ago. In doing so, you may incur the anger of many, but will earn the undying admiration and respect of many more, including this serviceman.
Thank you.
That’s all there is, folks.
