NBC released exit entrance polling data last night, with lots of interesting numbers. Iowa does not typically release actual vote tallies, but simple math with the exit polls gives a very good idea of the final tallies. Males were 43% of the Democratic primary voters. They split 50% to 44% favoring Sanders.
Females were 57% of the Democratic primary voters. They split 42% to 53%, favoring Hillary. Roughly speaking, Bernie got (0.43 X 0.50) + (0.57 X 0.42%) of the vote = 45.4% (only two sig digits should count) Hillary got (0.43 x 0.44) + (0.57 x 0.53) of the vote = 49.1%
49% to 45%, within rounding error of exactly what Selzer called out on Saturday (3%)! While many were claiming that Bernie could win the popular vote and still lose the delegate count, it appears the exact opposite happened — Hillary won many more votes, but it is not reflected by the delegates.
Another exciting result — 91% of Democrats were white, while 97% of Republican voters were white.
Can we please remake our primary system now?
Edit: they were entrance surveys, not exit polls.
Another Edit : 538 called it on the money : http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/election-2016/primary-forecast/iowa-democratic/#polls-only
49.1 to 44.7
That is amazing!
