For my young friends.
It's your future we're voting on. It's a bankrupt future left to you by Boomers who shed their idealism and morals as they started making the big bucks (or believed they might). It's an uncaring future left to you by Generations X and Y who couldn’t be bothered to vote. It's a cynical future the GOP consciously engineered to reduce your power as a citizen and your wages as a worker. It's a sad future where Millennials will be the first generation to do worse than their parents.
It's a future that's no good for you.
Consider two things. 1) The GOP's intensive voter suppression efforts have been tragically successful, but not yet enough to guarantee them all the victories they need. 2) Every last dime spent on elections is spent to influence voters. These things mean that the vote still matters; voters can put a stop to all this nonsense anytime they choose and build the kind of future we all want.
The only thing the GOP really fears is us. Well, actually, not you. They don't fear you, because they know that as a group, young voters, since 1978, have been less and less likely to vote (you're down to just 23%).
I'm not asking you to clean your room or mow the lawn. I'm asking you to take your future into your own hands. Literally. Like no generation before you, you are connected, moment to moment with other young people; you could so easily spread the word and decide the outcome for all of us if you choose to. You could flash mob the polls and decide this election.
The future does not have to look as bleak as it does now. But bleak it will be if the people who protect massive greed at your expense win this election. You can say no to that cynical future. So do it.
I know you hate it when I say it, but it really is for your own good.
