Looks like House Speaker Paul Ryan received Donald Trump's message, that if he doesn't get along with the Republican front-runner, "he's going to have to pay a big price." According to Ryan, it's all kumbaya.
He told Fox News that Trump had reached out to him, and that he's "pleased" to hear from Trump, that they are "working on setting something up right now," but it probably wouldn't be an in-person meeting because of scheduling conflicts. He's certain, though, that Trump would gladly embrace Paul Ryan's agenda.
Ryan described his agenda as a platform that applies conservative principles to help solve the country's problems, such as balancing the budget, growing the economy, replacing Obamacare, rebuilding the military and restoring the Constitution.
"I think these things, this five-point agenda that we're building out, are something that everybody running for president should easily support and grab onto," he said. "I just don't know The Donald, so I just, you know, we'll see. I would assume so."
Well, with such bold and visionary plans like "growing the economy" and "restoring the Constitution," he's speaking Trump's language. Because just like Trump, he doesn't have anything in the way of actual policies which will do any of those things. It does sound good, though. All the same, it's not a policy conflict that might make Trump just a little bit hostile to Ryan's overtures. It's that whole Mitt Romney problem.
But Ryan said he hadn't seen pre-released excerpts of Romney's speech. "As you know, Mitt and I are very close friends," Ryan said. "He's very worried about the future our party and our country. He's a principled conservative. And he's got a lot to say, and I look forward to seeing what he has to say."
So just maybe Trump isn't going to be as willing to work with Ryan as he hopes.
