In an unprecedented and forceful move, President Barack Obama’s administration is slamming a new gun control-themed ad from a super PAC backing Rep. Donna Edwards for Senate in Maryland, calling it “misleading” and demanding it be pulled down.
The ad hits Van Hollen for supporting the DISCLOSE Act, which called for more campaign transparency, but included a loophole for very large political organizations in order to garner support from more moderate Democrats. While this loophole included AARP and the Sierra Club, it also included the NRA, which is where Edwards’s Super PAC decided to strike a low blow. President Obama supported the bill.
The White House is further miffed by the use of footage of the President in a misleading context. The ad shows footage from January as President Obama teared up over gun violence.
But it doesn’t stop there. Edwards is hitting Van Hollen for non-existent ties to the NRA in her own new ad:
Edwards and Van Hollen both have career “F” ratings from the NRA.
Frankly, the White House is pissed and we all should be, too. We don’t need bullshit tactics like this in Democratic primaries.
