This primary season is becoming more and more contentious. Many people who would like to come to Dailykos are being turned off by the infighting. We have all said things, made snarky comments etc. But to me, there are a few things which simply should not be done now simply because they antagonize and they do nothing to advance our goals.
I hereby propose: No more diaries specifically designed to tear down the opponent. I’m not talking about election numbers diaries but rather of the type which say: The other candidate sucks and I’m going to tell you why. I found this diary www.dailykos.com/… very upsetting. But it applies to Bernie and Hillary supporters. First: It will win over exactly NO ONE on the other side. It will make the other side hate you. It will make the other side less likely to work for your candidate if he/she wins. Second: What are FACTS to you are not necessarily so set in stone for the other side. Third: It has next to zero bearing on what happens in the real word. We argue and argue and argue and argue on the same 20 points. If you really care about Bernie or Hillary, how about you get off your ass and do some phone banking? Go knock on some doors.
So I hereby propose that any diary put up for the express purpose of tearing down the other candidate down should be removed. If your diary will be received only with animus and rage, it may not be helping at all. Remember: You are going to need the help of the other side when this is over.
Better: Positive diaries about your candidate
Better: Experiences from the field and GOTV
Better: Take diaries which you know will cause nothing but anger to a safe Hillary or Bernie zone
I am aware we can choose what to read and what not to read. But this diary I mention uses sarcasm to draw you in and was intended to solely promote rage and alienate. I’m sure there are also many Hillary diaries of this type.
We have to start being better at being a community. And step 1 is for us not to hate our nominee, whoever he or she is. And step 2 is not for us to hate each other. As a community, we can do great things. When we are sniping at each other, we get nothing done in the real world.
