Interesting article over at Salon as they interview former Reagan and George H.W. Bush official, Bruce Bartlett, on his view of the current Republican party. Overall, this is interesting insight into how nutty things have gotten for the party in the opinion of an establishment GOP member. The quotes from Bartlett that jumped out me were:
“I think the Republican Party is sick. It’s dying, it just doesn’t know it. And I think anything that speeds up its demise is to the good, because then it can reinvent itself and return as something healthy…...Trump is a symptom of a disease of rampant stupidity, pandering to morons and bigots and racists and all the sort of stuff that defines today’s Republican coalition”.
Salon talks to Bruce Bartlett
I am used to hearing this stuff from Liberals and Progressives, but not so much from GOP members as to the current state of the Republican party. After reading this article this gives me some hope that moderate GOP members might be finally waking up to what is going on and maybe eventually taking back their party from the insane currently running that show.
It would be nice if we could have some kind of discourse in our country with the other side to intelligently discuss, debate and solve the problems we confront today. Sadly, that is not possible with the current GOP, since their only form of engagement appears to be confrontation and obstruction. It is rare that I find myself in agreement with a Republican, but in this case I hope Bartlett’s thoughts do come true this November.
