Greetings …
It’s Sunday evening, time for another edition of the Baja Arizona Kos weekly Open Thread. Click through for news and opinion from Tucson and Greater Baja.
Is it just me ?
We’ve had some delightful weather these last few weeks and it seems like it’s been a bit cooler this year than in years past. It’ll top out at about 98° today and I don’t think we’ve had more than one or two days where it’s been over 100. Usually by this time of year it’s triple digits every day and high 70s at night. Global warming ? It’s an ill wind indeed …

As we all know by now, there will be a contested primary this year in CD-2. Either Matt Heinz or Victoria Steele will be chosen by Baja Democrats to run against incumbent Martha McSally in our district. I went up to Steele’s campaign HQ on north Oracle last week for their Grand Opening. Victoria was introduced by County Supervisor Richard Elías and spoke briefly before circulating among the crowd to talk with supporters. During her talk she stressed environmental issues as one of her main concerns. This will be important since both the San Pedro watershed and the proposed Rosemont Mine are located in CD-2. I was interested in Victoria’s campaign because she has been endorsed by Raúl Grijalva, one of America’s leading Progressives and an early supporter of Bernie Sanders. Whether Sanders wins or loses the Democratic Presidential nomination we’ll still need more Progressives in Congress. She didn’t quote Sanders or Grijalva, but another of her main goals is to “create jobs by fixing our crumbling highways.” This is not incompatible with a Sanders speech or the People's Budget, which is one of Grijalva’s pet projects. Victoria, or the Woman of Steele, as they’re calling her, represents District 9 in the State House where fully one third of CD-2’s voters live. She’s very strong on education, she supports comprehensive immigration reform and she’ll be much better on women’s issues than McSally, just look at her biography. Music at the HQ event was provided by classical guitarist Gabriel Ayala.
Victoria and Matt

From my front yard …
Our big agave bloomed this year and now it will die. I wrote about this back in February when it first started blooming, here ☛ CUA, 2-22-'16. It is now over 16 feet high, we measured it.
OK …
That’s all I got this week. Anybody out there ? Talk to me.
