Edit 1: Edited the symbol != to read NOT EQUAL TO, thanks to comments.
I support HRC over Bernie, and have been quite open about it. I don’t want to mislead anyone.]
Sanders supporters = anti-establishment.
Trump supporters = anti-establishment.
So Sanders supporters = Trump supporters.
This seems to be a simplistic narrative being pushed to people not engaged in politics by the mainstream media. This is the impression I get by talking to people who usually do not follow politics much. I argue Sanders Supporters != Trump supporters. In computer programming != means “Not Equal to”.
Sanders supporters are against the Democratic party establishment. They are typically left of the Democratic party. They believe in a good active role for the government, they believe in using the power of the government to level the playing field against the vested interests, entrenched moneyed class etc. If at all, they are even more to the left of most Democrats.
Trump supporters are angry and seems to be against everything. To the extent you can find any coherence among Trump adherents, they are not merely against Republican party establishment, but also against government providing basic civil rights. In most other areas of government power they are all over the place.
So I think it is incorrect club Sanders supporters and Trump supporters as generic anti-establishment. Sanders supporters are consistently against the party establishment but not against government and their positions are consistent and are to the left of the Democratic party. Their beef with HRC is that they don’t really believe she means what she says, and even what she says is not left enough for them. But there is broad agreement between HRC supporters and Sanders supporters on policies, on use of government power etc.
